Role Summary

Netflix Animation Studios is seeking talented Lighting Artists to contribute to the production of high-end animated feature films. This role requires a balance of artistic sensibility and technical proficiency , enabling the creation of visually compelling lighting that enhances storytelling and cinematic realism.

As a Lighting Artist, you will be responsible for executing lighting setups from initial shot development through final frame delivery , ensuring that each scene aligns with the visual direction established by the Director, Production Designer, and Visual Effects Supervisor.

This position is ideal for professionals who are passionate about cinematography, color theory, and visual storytelling , and who possess the technical expertise to bring complex animated scenes to life.

Candidate Profile: Skills & Qualifications

We are looking for artists who are “creatively strong and quick learners.” You should have a deep appreciation for the craft of cinematography and the technical curiosity to master new software.

Professional Experience:

  • Proven Track Record: Solid experience in lighting for high-end animated feature films, VFX-heavy features, or premium episodic animation.

  • Portfolio Excellence: A demo reel showcasing a strong eye for light behavior, color theory, composition, and mood.

Technical Requirements:

  • Node-Based Expertise: Proficiency in Katana or Houdini is highly preferred.

  • Compositing Skills: Advanced knowledge of Nuke for multi-channel EXR compositing.

  • Pipeline Fluency: A comprehensive understanding of the 3D animation production pipeline, including shot-based workflows and render management.

Soft Skills & Collaboration:

  • Communication: Exceptional verbal and written communication skills to articulate technical hurdles and artistic progress to Leads and Production.
