Humber River Health is formally affiliated with both the University of Toronto and Queen's University and is committed to becoming a community academic hospital. ## The Role We are currently looking for a **Student Nurse Extern** to be a part of our **Alternative Level of Care (ALC) facility** at the Church Reactivation Care Centre. This is a temporary part-time position expected to run until **March 31, 2027**. You will work rotating shifts of 8 or 12 hours, covering days, evenings, nights, and weekends. The salary is **$17.60 per hour**. ### What You'll Do As a Student Nurse Extern, you will be an unregulated healthcare worker providing direct personal support to HRH patients. You will be responsible for basic care activities of daily living—such as bathing, toileting, feeding, and more—for up to 10 patients each shift. In a mental health setting, you may also assist with delivering meals, supporting visitor policies, and laundry services. Under the guidance of a recreation therapist, you might support therapeutic programming on inpatient units. You will work under the supervision of Registered Nurses (RNs) and Registered Practical Nurses (RPNs) in accordance with department policies and procedures. Documentation of activities of daily living (ADLs), including intake and output, and relevant patient communication will be part of your duties. Please note that this role does **not** involve performing or being delegated regulated acts such as medication administration, vital signs, assessments, etc. Any clinical concerns must be immediately reported to your direct supervisor. ### Who We're Looking For To succeed in this role, you should be currently enrolled in **years 2–4 of a nursing program of studies**. You must hold current CPR certification. Excellent communication and exceptional customer service skills are essential. You must be a team player who works well with others and can accurately and effectively communicate with inter-professional healthcare team members. A demonstrated understanding of technology use is important. You should be able to provide basic assistive care with frequent supervision and ongoing mentoring from an RN or RPN. Mandatory compliance with HRH training—including Privacy & Confidentiality requirements, WHMIS, Fire & Safety, and hand hygiene modules—is required. Strong interpersonal and communication skills, good judgment in assessing difficult situations, and an excellent attendance and discipline-free record are expected.
