Freelance Sound Designer (Project Based) - Fully Remote

This a Full Remote job, the offer is available from: Europe, European Union, EMEA, Germany

Softgames is looking for a Freelance Sound Designer (Project Based) to create the music and sound effects for a new, unannounced free-to-play casual game.

The game is a bright, relaxing island world where players combine items, help customers and build a place of their own. It ships on Facebook Instant Games, the web and mobile, so the audio has to sound great on phone speakers and stay light on download size.
The project starts with an initial audio package covering the soundtrack and core sound effects library. Further packages for new content may be commissioned separately as the game evolves. Each package is scoped and quoted individually.

Your Deliverables:

  • Sonic identity: a warm, upbeat, relaxing sound that players are happy to leave on

  • Soundtrack: main theme, seamless gameplay loops for the board and building areas, and short stingers for level-ups, completions and story moments

  • Core sound effects library: UI and menus, item interactions, rewards and currencies, building and decorating, customer orders, and ambience

  • Feedback sounds that scale with progression, so higher-tier items and bigger rewards feel bigger

  • Variations for frequent sounds, so they stay pleasant after thousands of plays

  • Game-ready delivery: clean loops, consistent loudness, clear naming, and formats and compression suited to web and mobile

  • Agreed revision rounds based on our brief, references and in-game review

What we are looking for:

  • A portfolio of shipped games where you created both the music and the sound effects

  • Experience with casual, mobile or web games, and a feel for the tactile feedback the genre depends on

  • A strong ear for warm, light-hearted styles such as acoustic, playful orchestral or relaxed tropical

  • Proven delivery of game-ready audio: seamless loops, variations, consistent loudness, and mixes that hold up on small speakers

  • Comfort working within file-size and memory budgets, including compressed web and mobile formats

  • The ability to turn a written brief and reference tracks into finished audio within agreed revision rounds

  • Clear written English and reliable async communication

Nice to Have:

  • Experience with merge, match-3, decoration or other casual puzzle games

  • Delivering audio for Unity, Unity WebGL or HTML5 games

  • Adaptive or layered music that responds to game state

  • Short character vocalisations or non-verbal voice sounds

  • Audio for live-ops content such as seasonal events

  • Familiarity with Facebook Instant Games or browser audio constraints such as autoplay rules

The Engagement:

  • Freelance and project-based. You work independently, set your own schedule, and use your own equipment, software and libraries.

  • Fixed-fee quote per package. Any follow-up packages are commissioned and quoted separately, with no obligation on either side.

  • A dedicated point of contact, clear briefs and references, and consolidated feedback.

  • The chance to define the sound of a new game from its first playable builds.

Rights and Originality:

  • All work must be original, with no uncleared samples. Please disclose any use of AI tools.

  • We acquire exclusive, unlimited, worldwide usage rights to all deliverables (full buyout). Music must be free of collecting-society claims.

  • An NDA is required, as the game is unannounced.
