Financial Controller

Position Summary

The Controller is responsible for the day-to-day leadership, integrity, and oversight of the company’s accounting operations. This role ensures accurate financial reporting, disciplined close processes, strong internal controls, and compliance with applicable accounting standards and regulatory requirements.

Reporting to the VP, Finance, the Controller serves as the senior operational accounting leader, translating financial policies and strategy into effective execution. The role combines hands-on technical accounting, team leadership, and cross-functional collaboration, while providing reliable financial information to support decision-making.

The Controller plays a critical role in strengthening financial discipline, improving processes, and scaling accounting operations as the organization continues to grow.

Key Responsibilities

Financial Reporting, Close, and Oversight

  • Own and manage the monthly, quarterly, and annual close processes, ensuring accuracy, completeness, and timeliness.
  • Prepare and review consolidated financial statements in accordance with applicable accounting standards.
  • Ensure consistent application of accounting policies within the operating division.
  • Review general ledger activity, journal entries, accruals, and estimates.
  • Provide detailed financial analysis and variance explanations to the VP, Finance.
  • Support the preparation of management reporting packages for senior leadership.

Accounting Operations & Team Leadership

  • Oversee day-to-day accounting functions, including general ledger, AP, AR, payroll accounting, and intercompany transactions.
  • Review and approve key accounting outputs prepared by staff or external service providers.
  • Establish clear workflows, responsibilities, and deadlines within the accounting function.
  • Mentor, train, and support junior accounting staff, fostering accuracy, accountability, and professional development.
  • Act as the escalation point for complex accounting issues and judgment calls.

Job Costing, WIP, and Operational Accounting

  • Oversee job costing, WIP, or project accounting processes where applicable.
  • Ensure revenue recognition, cost allocation, and margin reporting are accurate and supportable.
  • Review project-level financial performance and identify anomalies, risks, or control gaps.
  • Collaborate with operations and project leadership to ensure financial data aligns with operational reality.

Accounts Payable, Accounts Receivable & Cash Discipline

  • Provide oversight of accounts payable and receivable processes to ensure accuracy and timeliness.
  • Review aging reports and support resolution of outstanding receivables.
  • Ensure vendor payments, employee reimbursements, and statutory payments are properly controlled and authorized.
  • Support short-term cash flow monitoring and reporting for the VP, Finance.

Regulatory Compliance, Tax & External Coordination

  • Oversee the preparation and review of indirect tax filings (HST/GST), payroll remittances, and other statutory submissions.
  • Coordinate with external accountants on corporate tax compliance and filings.
  • Ensure all financial records and support are audit-ready.
  • Serve as the primary internal contact for external auditors during annual audits and reviews.
  • Address audit findings and implement corrective actions in coordination with the VP, Finance.

Internal Controls, Policies & Process Improvement

  • Implement and maintain strong internal controls over financial reporting and transactions.
  • Document and enforce accounting policies, procedures, and controls.
  • Identify process inefficiencies, risks, or control weaknesses and recommend improvements.
  • Support system enhancements, ERP implementations, and reporting automation initiatives.
  • Ensure accounting processes are scalable and consistently applied across entities.

Cross-Functional Collaboration & Finance Support

  • Partner with operations, shared services, and investment teams to ensure accurate financial data flows.
  • Provide accounting guidance to non-finance stakeholders as needed.
  • Support the VP, Finance with ad hoc analysis, reporting, and special projects.
  • Act as a reliable financial steward, ensuring discipline without impeding operational effectiveness.

Education and Qualifications

  • CPA designation (required).
  • Post-secondary education in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.
  • 7+ years of progressive accounting experience, including supervisory or managerial responsibility.
  • Strong technical accounting knowledge and experience with month-end and year-end close.
  • Advanced proficiency in accounting systems and Microsoft Excel.
  • Excellent organizational, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience working in an entrepreneurial organization.
  • Exposure to ERP implementations or finance system optimization.
  • Experience coordinating audits and working with external accounting firms.

Pay: $70,000.00-$110,000.00 per year
