Entry-Level Software Engineer

Smoothstack is hiring multiple entry-level software engineers for an opportunity that combines paid technical training with a direct path to an engineering team within the federal services arm of one of the world's largest technology consulting firms.

If you're an early-career software developer, junior software engineer, full-stack developer, or application developer with a solid coding foundation from coursework, projects, internships, or other hands-on experience, this opportunity is designed to help you take the next step into professional enterprise software engineering.

You'll start with 10 weeks of paid, intensive training focused on AI-assisted full-stack development, secure software engineering, cloud delivery, testing, and the practices used by enterprise engineering teams.

Then you'll join the client's engineering team in a hybrid role in Arlington, VA or Washington, DC, building and modernizing software that supports U.S. government agencies.

What you'll learn

This isn't a learn-to-code bootcamp. You bring the coding foundation. Smoothstack prepares you to use it inside a modern enterprise engineering environment.

During the 10-week program, you'll work through Agile sprints, technical tickets, code reviews, and production-style projects while developing skills in:

  • AI-assisted software development, testing, debugging, and documentation
  • Full-stack application development and API design
  • Java, Python, Spring Boot, Node.js, React, and related technologies
  • Automated testing, code quality, and software reliability
  • CI/CD, Docker, cloud deployment, and development automation
  • Secure and compliant use of AI in regulated environments

You'll finish the program with a production-style capstone before moving onto your client assignment.

What you'll do as a software engineer

You'll work alongside experienced engineers and contribute to production applications, services, and modernization initiatives.

As part of the engineering team, you'll:

  • Build and enhance full-stack applications, APIs, and microservices
  • Develop software using Java, Python, Spring Boot, Node.js, React, and related technologies
  • Use AI coding tools to support implementation, refactoring, testing, debugging, and documentation
  • Help modernize and containerize existing applications
  • Develop automated unit and integration tests
  • Contribute to CI/CD workflows and cloud deployments
  • Troubleshoot applications using logs, documentation, and development tools
  • Participate in technical design discussions, proofs of concept, code reviews, and Agile development
  • Collaborate with software engineers, product teams, security, and compliance partners

Who should apply

You should have:

  • U.S. citizenship
  • Hands-on coding experience through coursework, projects, internships, or similar technical work
  • A strong understanding of data structures, algorithms, and web or backend development concepts

  • Willingness to work hybrid in Arlington, VA or Washington, DC after training

Compensation and benefits

During the 10-week training program, you'll receive a biweekly stipend plus benefits.

Once deployed to the client assignment:

  • Year 1 salary: $75,000–$80,000
  • Year 2 salary: $95,000
